The Hummer, also known as the Humvee, has a rich history that dates back to the late 1970s. The US Army was looking for a versatile, lightweight vehicle that could replace its aging fleet of Jeeps and other utility transports. In 1979, AM General began designing the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), which would become the iconic Humvee. The Humvee was designed to be a jack-of-all-trades, with capabilities including cargo transport, troop carrier, ambulance, and even missile carrier. Its rugged build and stability off-road made it a mainstay of US military operations in the Middle East during the Gulf War. The civilian version, Hummer, was introduced in 1992, thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s enthusiasm for the vehicle. The Hummer H1 was essentially a stripped-down version of the military Humvee, with some creature comforts added. General Motors (GM) acquired the Hummer brand in 1999 and introduced the H2 and H3 models, which were smaller and more fuel-efficient. The Hummer brand was discontinued in 2010 due to declining sales and environmental concerns. However, GM resurrected the brand in 2020 with the introduction of the electric GMC Hummer EV. As for the military Humvee, it’s still in use, but it’s being phased out in favor of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), which offers improved armor and mobility. Over 280,000 Humvees have been produced, with many serving in militaries around the world.
